Suspected Car Thief Arrested In Jigawa For Car Theft During Test Drive

Law enforcement personnel from the Jigawa State Police Command have successfully apprehended an individual identified as Lawan Sabil, on suspicion of car theft.

Sabil is alleged to have made off with a Honda vehicle after a daring test drive at a car dealership in Bauchi State.

The incident was officially disclosed by DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in a statement issued on Sunday, September 17, 2023.

As per the PPRO’s statement, the suspect and two accomplices assumed the roles of potential buyers at the S Fawa Motors car dealership situated along Murtala Muhammad Way in Bauchi State.

They expressed their interest in taking the vehicle for a test drive before finalizing the purchase. However, their plans were thwarted when one vigilant sales attendant insisted on accompanying them during the test drive.

During the course of the test drive, the suspected individuals forcibly removed the attendant from the vehicle and promptly made their escape in the stolen Honda, leaving the stunned sales attendant stranded.

The incident triggered an urgent call for police intervention, prompting swift action by the Jigawa State authorities. A patrol team from the B/Kudu Divisional Police Headquarters intercepted the stolen vehicle, which happened to be a white-colored car with no proper registration, at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Sunday.

The suspect, Lawan Sabil, aged 35 and residing in Gwarimpa Quarters, FCT Abuja, was found behind the wheel of the stolen vehicle. In a desperate bid to evade capture, Sabil accelerated the vehicle to high speeds, disregarding repeated signals from the police to halt. Consequently, he collided with a cyclist on the road, leading to the stolen vehicle coming to a halt.

Following the collision, Lawan Sabil attempted to flee on foot but was promptly apprehended by law enforcement officers.

Meanwhile, the injured cyclist was expeditiously transported to a local hospital, where he received prompt medical attention and was subsequently discharged.

The legitimate owner of the stolen Honda, Usman Zubairu, aged 40 and a resident of Federal Locust in Bauchi State, has since stepped forward to reclaim his vehicle.

To ensure a comprehensive investigation into the matter, the Commissioner of Police for Jigawa State, CP Effiom Emmanuel Ekot, has directed the case to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse.

Once the investigation is concluded, the individuals involved in this audacious car theft will be brought before the court to face the full force of the law.
